What is the Adaire Schoolyard Phase 2 Planning Process?

Alexander Adaire K-8 is SO BLESSED to witness a fantastic Adaire Schoolyard Project transform the asphalt schoolyard into something SO much better in 2017! That's thanks a bit to our persistence, but mostly to The Trust for Public Land, Philadelphia Water Department, and the School District of Philadelphia anteing up. We're thrilled to watch the acre of asphalt at Thompson and Palmer streets turn into a rain garden, underground stormwater runoff storage, a playground, a fenced-off teacher's parking lot, an active play area on top of soft surfacing, a meditative walking trail, and more! But there's a reason we're calling this amazing project "Phase 1"! To advance our project, we had to accept that some items in our wish list just weren't going to happen right away. That's why we're starting our Phase 2 Planning Process!

There are 2 big parts of Phase 2: How to take care of the great park/playground we're getting, including how to get grants to extend the curriculum into the schoolyard, how to keep it clean and safe, how to manage access to it on weekends and summer, where to put benches and lighting, etc. And then the other half is what can we do with the rest of the schoolyard that won't be touched by this big awesome Phase 1 (meaning, everything that's not fenced off now!). Do we just put some new paint down for a basketball court and get a new backboard? Do we install a vegetable garden? Do we ... (fill in the blanks along with us!).
